History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes. And right now, a chilling echo from 1,600 years ago is screaming at us from the headlines.
In the last 24 hours, the White House announced a plan to “permanently pause migration” from poorer nations and begin “REVERSE MIGRATION,” a policy aimed at expelling millions.
This drastic move comes after the tragic shooting of two National Guard members in Washington D.C. The suspect, an Afghan national, was a man who once fought for America. He was part of a CIA-backed unit, a man we promised to protect through the Operation Allies Welcome program.
Now, in a stunning act of betrayal, his actions are being used as a pretext to slam the door on the very people who risked their lives for us. It’s a story of fear, scapegoating, and the abandonment of allies.
And it’s a story that has played out before. To understand what’s happening now, we must look back to the final, desperate days of the Roman Empire.
The Ghost of Adrianople: When Rome Betrayed Its Guardians
In the late 4th century, the mighty Roman Empire faced an existential threat: the Huns, a terrifying force sweeping in from the east. Fleeing annihilation, entire Gothic tribes arrived at the Danube River, the edge of the Roman world, and begged for refuge.

Their leader, Fritigern, didn’t ask for a handout. He offered a deal. His people would become foederati—federated allies. They would fight for Rome, defend its borders, and in return, receive land and protection. Emperor Valens agreed. It was a pragmatic solution for an empire in need of soldiers.
But the promise of partnership quickly curdled into exploitation. Roman commanders, Lupicinus and Maximus, saw the desperate Goths not as allies, but as a source of profit. They extorted the starving refugees, trading scraps of putrid meat and even dog flesh for their children.
The Goths, who had come seeking safety, were met with humiliation and starvation. Their loyalty was repaid with cruelty. The breaking point came in 378 CE at the Battle of Adrianople. The enraged Goths, driven by desperation, revolted. They crushed the Roman legions and killed Emperor Valens himself. It was a catastrophic defeat, a wound from which the empire would never truly recover.

Alaric’s Revenge: The Road Paved with Broken Promises
One of the Goths who witnessed this betrayal was a young nobleman named Alaric. Despite the treachery, he still believed in the promise of Rome. He joined the Roman army, served loyally, and fought in its campaigns. But time and again, he was denied the respect and position he had earned.
His repeated attempts to negotiate for land and recognition for his people were met with indifference and duplicity by the Western Roman Emperor Honorius, who was safely insulated in his palace at Ravenna.

Finally, after decades of broken promises, Alaric had enough. In 410 CE, he did the unthinkable: he marched his army on the city of Rome itself.
But this was not a barbarian rampage. Alaric’s sack of Rome was a disciplined, strategic act. As Christians, the Goths spared the city’s great basilicas. They respected sanctuaries and avoided a general slaughter of the populace. After three days, they left, their point having been made. They were not savages; they were betrayed allies demanding the respect they were owed.
The Pattern That Topples Empires
This pattern is a timeless one. An empire, facing internal decay and external threats, recruits outsiders to do its dirty work. It promises them a place at the table in exchange for their blood and loyalty.
But when fear and paranoia take root, those same allies become convenient scapegoats. A single incident is used to paint an entire population as a threat. The promises are broken, and the very people who served the empire are cast out.
Today, we see this same tragic story unfolding. Afghan allies who fought the Taliban alongside American soldiers, who were promised a new life, are now being demonized because of the actions of one man. The call for “REVERSE MIGRATION” is a chilling echo of Rome’s final, fatal mistake.
History’s warning is clear: when an empire betrays its allies, it betrays itself. It sows the seeds of its own destruction. The Goths didn’t destroy Rome; Rome destroyed itself when it abandoned its honor.
