A Nation for Sale
Rome was for sale.
Who sold it? The emperor’s guards.
This is a true story. It is a scary story. It sounds like America now.
Our government is shut down. A judge stopped a plan to fire workers. The judge said the plan was wrong.
Leaders argue. The country waits. The people who should serve are stuck. The system is breaking down.
To see the danger, we must look back in time.
Guards Who Became Greedy

They were Rome’s best soldiers. They were the emperor’s protectors.
But they became spoiled. An emperor gave them too much. A writer said they were “lazy and greedy.”
Then a new emperor came. His name was Pertinax. He was a good man. He tried to fix things.
What did he get? He was killed. The Guard murdered him.
What they did next was a shock.
The guards sold the Roman Empire.
The World’s Craziest Sale

Two rich men bid for the throne.
One man made a huge offer. He offered a lot of money to each soldier.
The guards’ loyalty was for sale. They made him emperor.
They took their new emperor to the Senate. They had armed men with them. The senators were scared. They had to agree.
But the story is not over. The new emperor could not pay. He did not have the money. He was emperor for only 66 days. Then he was also killed.
This was a total failure. It led to a civil war. A strong general had to march on Rome. He got rid of the Guard. He started over.
A Warning for America

We see the same things today.
Our government is stuck. Workers are treated like game pieces.
When systems that should serve the people become tools of power, a nation is in trouble.
The Guard forgot their job. They saw themselves as masters. They thought the state was there for them.
Is this happening in America today? When parties want power more than they want to govern, we are on a dangerous road.

The Final Warning
The story of 193 AD is a clear warning. The biggest threats to a country often come from inside.
When the people who run the government forget why they are there, they can hold a nation hostage.
The Roman Senate was once powerful. But it was forced to obey an emperor chosen by guards. The people’s will did not matter. Only the guards’ greed mattered.
Today’s shutdown is not an auction. But it is a sign of the same problem. It is a failure of leadership.
