What’s happening now?

A screenshot lands in the family chat. It looks official. Someone has already added, “Can you believe this?”

The federal general election is Tuesday, November 3. The next few days will bring a rush of claims, maps and results. A fast screenshot can travel farther than the explanation attached to it.

Before you share it, find the original source. A date and a counting label can change what a number means.

Has this happened before?

On November 2, 1920, a radio station in Pittsburgh carried the Harding–Cox election returns. KDKA’s broadcast let people hear news in their homes instead of waiting only for the next newspaper.

It was a striking change in delivery. But the news still had to be gathered before it could be read aloud. The microphone could carry a report quickly; it could not make every precinct report at once.

Today, a phone can deliver a map in seconds. The basic gap remains: how fast a report reaches you is different from how complete the count is.

What happened next?

Radio became a major way Americans followed public events. Faster delivery made the source and the stage of the report more important, not less.

A quick report is not automatically a final report. Election offices publish results and explain their status. A media projection, unofficial tally and certified result are different things. Read the label before drawing a conclusion.

What can I do?

Take 10 minutes to save your state or local election office’s results page. Reach it through your state’s official election website, rather than a link in an unexpected message.

For one claim, find the original post or document. Check when it was published, which place it covers and whether it describes a partial count. If you cannot trace it, pause instead of adding your name to the chain.

Use the card below when a claim makes you angry or eager to share. This check works for your own side, too. It protects your time and your credibility.

An ordinary man in his late 50s at a kitchen table checks an official-looking election website on a laptop, compares a message on his phone, and writes a source name on a small paper card. Screens have indistinct text, no fabricated vote numbers.
