What’s happening now?
Today is Election Day. A map can fill in fast after polls close. You may see a race called on TV while your county is still adding ballots to its tally.
An election-night total is a count so far. Your state or county follows its own schedule for checking results and making them official. A shift as more results come in can tell you more about which ballots have been reported than about what voters did that night.
Has this happened before?
In 2000, the presidential race came down to a close count in Florida. The dispute made the mechanics of voting, counting and reviewing ballots part of the story. Congress later passed the Help America Vote Act in 2002.
What happened next?
The law set new minimum standards for federal elections and created the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. The practical lesson is to ask which step the number comes from before treating it as the final word.
Your phone is dead. The instructions are on it.
No screen. No saved how-to. Put useful food and household skills somewhere you can open without a charger. What would you want on that shelf?
What can I do?
Pick one race you care about. Save the official state or county results page. Write down when you checked it and whether the page marks the tally unofficial. Look up the local schedule for certifying results if you want to know when to check back.
