Youth football coach Marcus Burkley knew there would be backlash if his players knelt\u00a0during the national anthem. He just never thought\u00a0it would\u00a0be this severe.<\/p>\n

When three members of Burkley\u2019s all-black team took a knee during a Saturday night game in Bethel Park, Pa., people in the stands began shouting racial slurs at them, eventually becoming so aggressive\u00a0that police were called to keep the peace, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce they took a knee, you see cameras and people taking pictures,\u201d Burkley, who is also African American, told WPXI. \u201cAnd out of nowhere you just hear, \u2018If the little n-word want to take a knee, they shouldn\u2019t be able to play.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

As the game proceeded, Burkley said, some of his\u00a012- and 13-year-old\u00a0players told him\u00a0they heard the same thing on the field from the opposing team. He\u00a0said neither he nor his Woodland Hills Wolverines had encountered\u00a0anything like it in the two years they have played in the league.<\/p>\n
