A group of New Jersey eighth-grade students schooled House Speaker Paul Ryan over his unwillingness to critique President Trump.<\/p>\n

About half \u200bof the more than 200\u200b students from South Orange Middle School refused to pose for a photo with Ryan during a school trip to Washington, D.C., last Thursday.<\/p>\n

Matthew Malespina, 13, who waited \u200bacross the street \u200bwith other classmates\u200b declining to be in the picture with the Wisconsin Republican\u200b, said the school informed them the night before of the photo op on the Capitol steps.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018Oh God, I\u2019m not taking a picture with this man.\u2019 I first texted my mom because my mom hates Paul Ryan as well,\u201d Matthew told the Post\u200b on Sunday.\u200b \u201cAnd I was saying to her, Oh \u200bG\u200bod, I can\u2019t do this. I can\u2019t take a picture with him.\u2019 She said that was completely fine, just be respectful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Being in the photo wasn\u2019t mandatory, Matthew said, \u200bso he was surprised by the number of students who agreed to turn out because of the lack of support among \u200bthe \u200bstudents for Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur school is pretty liberal. I only know three Trump supporters in our grade and there\u2019s a lot people in our grade. So it\u2019s fairly liberal. [Teachers] knew that a lot of people didn\u2019t like Paul Ryan,\u201d he said. \u201cBut they gave us the option. I was shocked by the number of people who wanted to join me and my friends to not take a picture of him. It was like half the grade.\u201d<\/p>\n

His mom, Elissa Malespina, said she\u2019s proud of her son for standing up for his \u200bprinciples.<\/p>\n
